Pros and cons
Pros
- Starts at 16GB of memory; the M3 MacBook Air started at 8GB
- 10-core CPU, up from 8 cores on the M3
- Runs two external displays with the lid open; the M3 needs the lid closed for a second display
- 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, replacing the M3's 1080p camera
- Up to 18 hours of video streaming at 1.24 kg
Cons
- Starts at 256GB; the M5 MacBook Air that replaced it starts at 512GB
- Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, where the M5 model has Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6
- The 13.6-inch display tops out at 500 nits, with no ProMotion
Our verdict
The M4 MacBook Air fixed the M3's two weak spots: memory now starts at 16GB, and it drives two external displays with the lid open. Add a 12MP Center Stage camera and up to 18 hours of video streaming, and it is all the laptop most people need.
The M5 Air (March 2026) has the same design, battery life and ports, with faster AI performance, Wi-Fi 7 and 512GB to start. If the M4 is noticeably cheaper, it is the better buy.
