How store ratings work

Store rating out of 5: five things that matter after you pay, checked against each store's own policy pages. Price is not part of the rating; it is compared offer by offer. If a store does not state a policy, we mark it "Not stated" and score it zero. If we have not read a policy yet, we mark it "Not reviewed yet" and leave it out of the rating. Open a store to see what we found on each point.

The scoring rules in full
  • Store rating (out of 5): pass = 1, partly = 0.5, fails or not stated = 0, across warranty length, warranty cover, returns, refunds and battery, scaled to 5 over the points we have reviewed. A point we have not reviewed yet is left out, never scored as zero.
  • Recommended: 4.0 or more. Good, with caveats: 3.0 or more. Buy with care: below 3.0. Not fully reviewed: two or more policy points we have not reviewed yet; these stores are left out of the "Best on warranty and returns" list.
  • Price is not in the rating. The "Best on price" list shows how often a store is cheapest for the same model, option, colour and condition, among stores with 30 or more comparisons whose median price is within 8% of the cheapest. Stores we rate "Buy with care" are left out.
  • Warranty: pass at 12 months or more (or brand warranty on new stock); partly at 3 to 11 months.
  • Returns: pass at 14 days or more; partly at 7 to 13 days, or when only sealed or faulty items can go back. Refunds: pass with no change-of-mind fee; partly with a fee up to 15%.
  • Battery: pass with a guaranteed 85% or more (or new); partly at 80% or when only shown per listing.
