Pros and cons
Pros
- ProMotion up to 120Hz and Always-On; the iPhone 16 has neither
- Up to 30 hours of video playback, 8 hours more than the iPhone 16
- 48MP Ultra Wide camera; the iPhone 16 has a 12MP one
- Starts at 256GB, double the iPhone 16's 128GB
- 18MP Center Stage front camera takes landscape selfies with the phone held upright
Cons
- eSIM only in the UAE, where the iPhone 16 takes a nano-SIM
- No Telephoto camera: zoom is 2x optical quality, against 8x on the 17 Pro
- USB 2 at up to 480Mb/s; the 17 Pro has USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s
Our verdict
The iPhone 17 closes most of the gap to the Pro: a 120Hz ProMotion screen with Always-On, a 48MP Ultra Wide, an 18MP front camera, 256GB to start and up to 30 hours of video playback. For most people it is the iPhone to buy from the 17 line.
Pay for the 17 Pro if you want the 8x Telephoto, USB 3 transfers or the extra battery. If you need a physical SIM card, the iPhone 16 sold in the UAE still takes one.
